adidas Gigantic Shoe Promotion

August 13th, 2009

This clever street promotion was unveiled in Leidse Square, Amsterdam; home to an abundance of tourist hotspots and sports–ideal for any guerrilla marketing campaign. The oversized shoe box features some city teens showcasing custom t-shirts and shoes from adidas. I’m sure that the campaign made some people laugh, especially when they saw the shoe size on the side of the box.

Jekyll and Hyde Restaurant Promotion

August 11th, 2009

Every so often during the week, I have seen this car flash in and out of the streets in New York City, almost like something out of the Twighlight Zone. Every time it passes by me, I’m not quick enough to rifle through my book bag, grab my camera, and take a picture. Fortunately, Flickr has taken care of that.

Anyway, if you’re sharp enough, you’ll see this custom car meander through the Manhattan to promote the one and only Jekyll and Hyde restaurant and bar. As stated from its website: “Jekyll and Hyde is a haunted restaurant and bar for eccentric explorers and mad scientists where guests can eat and drink among the unusual and the bizarre.” The restaurant offers a unique experience by being the only dining entity in New York City that provides ongoing “spooky special effects” and live entertainment.

For me, the car promotion isn’t incredibly frightening, but quite entertaining and funny–at first glance, the chrome statues that occupy the car and are crawling out of the windows look like real people. The only thing I wish was more noticable is the location of the restaurant (91 7th Ave.), which blends in with the color of the car and is located towards the back-end. All the same, it’s still an eye-catching promotion that I have not seen any other restaurant enact, so hats off to Jekyll and Hyde!

Spider Man is Breeding

August 5th, 2009

There have already been three Spider Man movies, but will a fourth one ever come out? Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said that there will indeed be a fourth one, plus many more to come. This guy must have known about all of the future Spider Man’s to come; if there are a lot more, I guess a little Spider Man is bound to be born at some point. Unfortunately, this has some people worried after the ratings of Spider Man 3 were so poor. Many film critics saw Peter Parker’s alter-ego as a soppy super hero who played the piano too much and had the appearance of a pathetic emo-goth who hates himself and the world. At least we know there will always be one loyal fan who skips the Spider Man promotional apparel and dresses in the actually superhero costume before each premier!

Will and Bear’s Promotion for Land of the Lost

July 31st, 2009

Earlier this summer, Will Ferrell appeared on an epsiode with Bear Grylls in the hit reality show Man vs Wild. Will joined Bear in order to promote his most recent movie, Land of the Lost, and to challenge himself in a way he had never done before. Will and Bear survived 48 hours in the north of Sweden, where they rappeled down frozen waterfalls, ate reindeer eyeballs, shared a snow shelter, rummaged for food in the forest, and amother other things, drank their own urine. Although Will was decked out in custom winter apparel, you could tell that he was struggling through much of the trip. Still, he managed to incorporate his humor into the episode by blindsiding Bear with a tackle and claiming that he lost his “you know what” while urinating on the snow. This is the most extreme movie promotion that has ever existed, but was it worth it? For Will, it totally was. Towards the end of the episode, he takes a break from hiking to admire the light snowfall, and tells Bear that the beauty of the scene makes the trip worth it.

Harrah For Vacation Getaways

July 21st, 2009

Harrah’s Entertainment, Inc., the world’s largest provider of branded casino entertainment, is currently running a promotion to drive more traffic to its website. In New York City, I came across a few fellows wearing these custom bath robes and handing out promotional cards advertising Harrah’s latest vacation promotion. Each card has a scratch off section with a prize code for the chance to win a free weekend at one of Harrah’s vacation getaways. Those interested simply go to escwknd.com and enter the code from the scratch off card. At first, I thought this was a promotion for a spa or massage parlor, but the card cleared up everything. This is an awesome street marketing idea, especially since the majority of people you see at 8:45 am on a weekday in Manhatten are wearing business suits; it’s bound to catch someone’s attention.

Spaghetti Branding

July 17th, 2009

Mondo Pasta, a restaurant in Germany, decided to take its promotions off the street and onto the docks. The rope lines for these ships are being belayed through a hole, which happens to be the mouth of someone who looks like they are eating pasta. Not only is this a creative marketing idea, but it takes advantage of a very populated area, since the harbor where it’s placed is the second biggest in Europe. Unfortunately, the business won’t be able to afford another promotion like this one, but it can certainly distribute promotional fridge magnets or custom key chains to all the people circulating around the docks.

Snickers Jargon

July 13th, 2009

Snickers has become really active in it’s marketing campaign this summer. Aside from sending Mr. T all over the world to promote its brand name, it has also enacted more traditional marketing tactics, such as planting custom signs and billboards in major cities across the U.S. From cabs to city sidewalks, “Hungerectomy” and “Chewjitsu” signs are ubiquitous, signifying that the Snickers candy bar is more of an art or science rather than just plain food. Snicker’s executives are obviously trying to implant a more memorable image into the mind of consumers so that when they open the new imprinted wrapper, they are not just eating the candy bar but they are embracing the marketing campaign as well.

The Chase Is On

July 10th, 2009

What’s better than buying a designer handbag? Being the first one to chase it down. Designer Rachel Nasvik carefully placed 96 of her custom handbags in various spots throughout New York City to engage her customers in a guerrilla marketing campaign. In these bags one could find other promotional items, such as imprinted lip gloss, bobby pins, and several other products. To work in some social media into the campaign, Rachel used Twitter to give contestents hints on where the hidden bags were placed and updated searchers on which ones were found through her blog. What a fun, interactive marketing scheme!

Bruno Takes Promotions to the Street

July 9th, 2009

moviejunkieonline.com

Comedian Sacha Cohen continues his role playing with his upcoming movie, Bruno. The movie premiers July 10th and is expected to be even more controversial than his last movie. Aside from appearing on the 2009 MTV movie awards with Eminem, Cohen has been involved in various other activities and events to promote the movie. Last month, Bruno was found in the streets of London debuting his movie by wearing a bearskin hat, military-inspired sleeveless red vest, and very skintight black hotpants and boots. It’s too bad there weren’t enough of these custom vests to go around, but I’m sure there is plenty of promotional apparel online that Bruno fans can buy.
