Funny People Viral Marketing Promotion

August 10th, 2009

To promote Judd Apatow’s latest film, Funny People, NBC recently launched a mini-site within its own website called “Yo Teach…!” The website is for the fake TV series “Yo Teach…!” within the movie and stars Jason Schwartzman’s character from Funny People, Mark Taylor Jackson. Schwartzman’s plays a high school teacher (Mr. Bradford) who constantly deviates away from his lesson plan into a moral lecture about many of life’s troubles. The site uploads new videos and pictures on a weekly basis and features a community section with various forums and discussion topics. The website is strictly to promote Funny People, but has duped many people into thinking it is a real T.V. series which debuts this fall. Like the movie, the videos are very funny, and the way Schwartzman walks around in the movie in the same old-fashioned corporate apparel makes the show seem like a continuation of our once favorite T.V. series Saved By The Bell.

Geico “Kash” Card

August 6th, 2009

Think Geico is all about T.V. ads? It’s true, the Martin Agency has been extremely successful in producing funny commercials with Geico’s feature characters “Kash” (the block of money with googly eyes) and the two cavemen. However, here and there, the company has taken its promotional efforts off the streets and directly into the hands of consumers. Earlier this summer, Geico released a free promotional “Kash” card with 20$ on it for buying gas. The deal lasted for over a month and the only requirements were that participants had to have a Hawaii rated policy and own a car. So, not only did drivers get gas money but they learned about Geico in the process. Why don’t more companies utilize these kinds of deals with their custom business cards?

Spider Man is Breeding

August 5th, 2009

There have already been three Spider Man movies, but will a fourth one ever come out? Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said that there will indeed be a fourth one, plus many more to come. This guy must have known about all of the future Spider Man’s to come; if there are a lot more, I guess a little Spider Man is bound to be born at some point. Unfortunately, this has some people worried after the ratings of Spider Man 3 were so poor. Many film critics saw Peter Parker’s alter-ego as a soppy super hero who played the piano too much and had the appearance of a pathetic emo-goth who hates himself and the world. At least we know there will always be one loyal fan who skips the Spider Man promotional apparel and dresses in the actually superhero costume before each premier!

Lloyd’s Blog: Funny and Effective Promotion for Entourage

August 4th, 2009

If you watch Entourage, the hit HBO series based on the life of Mark Wahlberg, you are familiar with the under-appreciated Hollywood assistant, Lloyd. Lloyd takes constant verbal abuse every episode from his aggressive boss, Ari Gold, who has recently decided to promote Lloyd if he survives 100 days of Ari’s continuous demands and challenges. This is probably one of the reasons Entourage decided to launch a Lloyd blog this year; he can vent through vlog and blog posts about the constant nagging from Ari and any inside information at the agency. Plus, the blog has really helped to promote the show and is a lot better than coming out with promotional apparel featuring Vince and Eric on custom t-shirts all over the U.S.

Lloyd is an outgoing, talkative, dynamic character that appeals to much of the Entourage base, as Ari’s demeaning comments about Lloyd’s sexuality continues to make viewers laugh. Well, if you’re in for more laughter, Lloyd’s blog is acutally quite funny, even without Ari in the mix. Lloyd is a clever writer much of what he has to say about Ari is phrased in an intelligent yet comical manner. For example, Lloyd recently did a vlog post which translates many of Ari’s viscious orders into normal business requests. Check it out if you want a good laugh.

Cold Blooded Coors Light

August 3rd, 2009

Coors Light has had immense success with its TV commercials lately; its ads featuring real clips from press conferences have had beer goers everywhere repeating quotes from famous coaches such as “playoffs?!” (Jim Mora) and “they are who we thought they were!” (Denny Green). These quotes are woven into the fake Coors Light press conferences to highlight the refreshing taste of the beer and add some hilarity to the some of the most memorable quotes in sports history.

Coors Light is now feeding its marketing rampage by using popular radio stations to broadcast it most recent campaign, which focuses on the refreshing chill of the beer. To effectively carry this message out, Coors Light has been taking famous songs that use the word “hot” and replacing it with the word “cold.” Take a listen to the company’s version of Foreigner’s “Hot Blooded” hit song. There may be no more need for those Coors Light custom bottle openers or promotional posters in grocery stores anymore, these radio promotions are doing a better job of making the brand more memorable and they are ten times funnier.

Mac vs PC

July 30th, 2009

Mac and Apple have had an ongoing battle lately, consuming T.V. commercial airtime left and right. Mac’s character (played by Justin Long) prides himself in his ability to be a safer, faster computer which provides more storage and backup capabilites. There are also other features in which people choose Macs over PC’s, such as better custom digital accessories as well as more advanced graphics for gamers. Overall, the Mac T.V. campaign has done a great job so far because Justin Long is able to depict the benefits of a Mac in a simple yet humurous manner. Check out this ad with Gisele Bundchen if you want an example.

Washed Up Athlete + Great Candy = Funny Commercial

July 28th, 2009

It’s about time Snickers brought in a “celebrity” to promote its candy bar. I have doubts as to whether Patrick Ewing can still dunk, but the commerical is funny enough to have me thinking about Snickers for a while. It’s cool to see that the company is developing more creative ad campaigns; it adds even more brand awareness to the millions of cabs that have custom signs showcasing the Snicker’s logo.

The Mr. Clean Car Wash

July 14th, 2009

mrcleancarwash.com

The past several years, Mr. Clean has been more determined than ever to creatively expand its product line and services. In Cincinatti and Atlanta, you can now find Mr. Clean car wash stations, all of which vacuum the inside of your car in addition to the wash. Until July 31st, Mr. Clean himself will be visiting all of the locations to sign autographs, and you can also enter for the chance to win a 2009 Ford Fusion Hybrid. Consumers can also sign up to be a V.I.P. member of Mr. Clean Car Wash in which they receive custom business cards that are valid for any of the car wash locations. It seems as though there’s no need to give away any imprinted key chains or promotional tire gauges, at least not until the real Mr. Clean has to vacate the car wash and go back to his family.

Stay Away From That Baby

July 1st, 2009

shockya.com

The season premier of Dexter, the hit television show on Showtime, begins this September and has fans patiently awaiting what creative murder will take place this season. The series is about a crime investigator who hand-picks criminals to kill that murder other people. How ironic, eh? This promotional poster is advertising the upcoming season and features an unflattering baby with pasta sauce (a.k.a. blood) on his bib. The poster is quite clever and is sure to have viewers wondering what crime scenes next season will bring.

Run Your Own Paper Company

June 25th, 2009

This promotional t-shirt features the paper company which Michael runs on the hit NBC show The Office. The comedy originally aired during 2001 in the U.K and has become a huge hit in the U.S., especially among college students. Custom apparel that has a satirical vibe always seems to be effective and can be great for word of mouth or viral marketing. It would be even better to see some imprinted office items to go along with the t-shirt!
